It's been a while...

...but I have few new ones. First up is a green Kenmore 158-14001 model, paid $15 but it was missing the bobbin case so I spent $10 on a new one of those. I like these old Kenmores, very strong motors!

  1. My mother gave me one of these 14000's when I was a teenager. I had been sewing on her straight-stitch-only White model 77 since age 7 or 8, so this brand new zig-zag/stretch-stitch machine was HEAVEN as far as I was concerned! I used it for many years and even made a wedding gown with it. But as electronic machines came to be I bought one of those about 30-some years ago (a Baby Lock that still works beautifully) and sold the Kennie. But I became sentimental about my old Kennie, it was a workhorse and never failed me. So when I found a refurbished one online a couple of years ago, I snapped it up and now use it as backup for my big electronic sewing/quilting machine. It's a joy to use, still a workhorse and will serve generations to come if taken care of - it's a gem!
I'm changing the subject here, but in another of your posts you spoke of Featherweights and Kenmore 158-1040's. I thought I wanted a Featherweight, but bought a 1040 instead because of my love for Kenmore's. It works perfectly after some cleaning, oiling and re-greasing. It's surprisingly quiet, strong and smooth. It will sew through garment-weight leather with ease. I have a second one that I bought originally for parts, but decided to work on it and bring it back into use as well. It's taking a while, but I'm getting there! I LOVE these machines and feel lucky to have found them when I did. They are now much in demand and usually beyond what my senior citizen budget can handle. Like you, I love sewing machines, some vintage, some modern and I have 9 in total.
Sewing is my favorite pastime and I was delighted to find your blog.
